Investigations and Impeachment Threats Loom
Another area where Trump, already twice impeached, would prefer to avoid a Democratic House is the various investigative powers it wields.
With control of House committees, Democrats could launch probes into the former president's actions and decisions, creating ongoing headaches for the Trump administration even if they don't result in substantive changes. This could include inquiries into topics like the origins of COVID-19 or the prosecution of rioters involved in the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
Crucially, a Democratic House majority would also give them the ability to pursue impeachment proceedings against Trump - something he has already experienced twice before during his first term. While conviction in the Senate remains unlikely, the mere threat of impeachment could significantly constrain the president's agenda and embroil his administration in constant political battles.
In contrast, if Republicans retain control of the House, you could envision a continuation of investigations targeting the outgoing Biden administration's actions, rather than scrutiny directed at Trump himself. This would provide the former president with a much more favorable environment to advance his priorities without the looming threat of impeachment.
The balance of power in the House will therefore be a key determinant of whether Trump faces intense oversight and potential impeachment threats during his second term, or whether he benefits from a more cooperative Republican-led chamber.
